Topic index
Topics – all the percentage calculators by theme
The site's 15 calculators are grouped into six topics by the situation you're in. The same calculator can belong to more than one topic.
The topics and what's in them
Discounts and prices
Price is the number that percentages get calculated around most. A discount is taken off the price, an increase is added to it, VAT is worked out on top of it and margin sits inside it. These are all the same calculation from different directions – which is exactly why they get muddled up so often.

Tax and VAT
In English the word "tax" covers two completely different things in a search box. VAT is a consumption tax added to the price of goods or services. Income Tax is a personal tax deducted from your pay under your tax code. They're worked out with different formulas, and mixing them up produces wrong figures in both directions.

Salary and work
At work, percentages are talked about at the negotiating table, but your own finances run on pounds. A 3% rise means a different amount on a £2,200 and a £4,200 salary, and only part of a gross rise reaches your account. This topic's calculators turn percentages into pounds in both directions.

Loans and interest
Interest is a percentage that compounds over time. That's why a change in the rate that sounds small shows up surprisingly large in pounds – and why you shouldn't make a loan decision on the monthly payment alone.

Maths and formulas
Per cent means one hundredth, and a percentage is in practice a multiplier. Once you take that in, every percentage task turns into an ordinary multiplication or division. The pages in this topic are meant for learning and checking, not just a quick answer.

Everyday and leisure
Percentages don't live only in an invoice and on a payslip. They're also a drink's strength, a fuel price rise and the number next to a set in your training programme. In these calculations the units matter more than anywhere else.

Why the topic pages exist
A single calculator answers one question, but a real situation is rarely that neatly bounded. When you work out a discount, the next question is often VAT or margin. When you work out a pay rise, the next question is your tax rate. The topic pages bring the tools for the same situation together, so you don't have to hunt for them separately.
If you're looking for a specific calculator by name, the sitemap lists them all.
